US markets open higher, Ukraine center of attention

Major stock markets in the United States opened higher on Friday, as conflict in Ukraine continues to unfold. Earlier today, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that the talks with Ukraine were moving in a positive direction.

A few hours later, however, Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal stated that there was no progress in the negotiations. Meanwhile, BlackRock Inc. reportedly lost around $17 billion on its holdings in Russian securities.

The Dow Jones rose 0.79% or 261 points at 9:31 am ET, with Cisco Systems gaining 1.98%. At the same time, the Nasdaq 100 was up 0.90% as Applied Materials jumped 3.44% at 9:33 am ET. The S&P 500 increased 0.68% at 9:32 am ET, with EPAM Systems soaring 4.62% at 9:33 am ET.

The euro rose 0.06% against the dollar at 9:29 am ET, selling for $1.09843.
