Hungary demands oil embargo off EU agenda

Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto told the reporters on Wednesday the country will vote against the Russian oil embargo as long as it jeopardizes Hungary's energy supplies, noting that Budapest demands the issue is off the agenda of the next week's European Council meeting.

"The solution must come first, and only then can we talk about sanctions," said Szijjarto. The head of the ministry argued it was "unrealistic" for the European Commission to come up with an acceptable proposal in this regard as early as this week, stressing that the bloc must take into account diverse energy supply systems in member states.

Hungarian President Viktor Orban directed a letter to European Council President Charles Michel the day before, noting that Budapest is "not in a position to agree to the 6th sanctions package until the negotiations succeed in resolving all outstanding issues."
