Dow loses 250 pts as Q2 draws to a close

Stock exchanges in New York City closed in the red territory on Thursday, the last day of the second quarter. During the trimester, the United States markets have been negatively affected by the Federal Reserve's decision to push tighter monetary policy in order to ease demand in the economy and bring down inflation from highs unseen in four decades. Today, investors monitored the final day of the Madrid NATO summit as well as data reports on jobless claims and personal spending.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average index closed with a 0.82% or a 254-point loss. The Nasdaq 100 decreased 1.33% at the close. The S&P 500 was 0.88% lower at the end of trading. All three indexes were pulled down by Walgreens Boots Alliance's 7.27% drop.

The euro was 0.34% up compared to the dollar, going for 1.04780 at 3:59 pm ET.
