The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) granted on Wednesday emergency use authorizations for COVID-19 updated vaccines made by Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna as booster shots. The bivalent vaccines contain two messenger RNA (mRNA) components of the virus, one of the original strain of COVID-19, and another existing in the BA.4 and BA.5 subvariants of the Omicron variant.

The Pfizer/BioNTech booster is approved as a single dose in individuals aged 12 and older, while the Moderna shot is authorized for those aged 18 and older. The FDA said the boosters are expected to provide increased protection against the Omicron variant based on the available data. It added that the previous monovalent boosters will no longer be authorized for individuals 12 years of age and older.
