Pfizer Inc. will distribute six million courses of its coronavirus antiviral drug Paxlovid to low- and middle-income countries, as part of the Global Fund's COVID-19 Response Mechanism, the company's Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Albert Bourla revealed in a statement on Thursday.

"This agreement with Global Fund is a critical step that will boost equitable access for high-risk patients in low-and-middle-income countries," the company's CEO said. According to the statement, the company expects the supply to be made available within this year, in accordance with regulatory license or approval based on country demand.

Earlier this year, the pharmaceutical company delivered four million doses of its COVID-19 oral treatment to UNICEF, which distributed them to 95 low- and middle-income countries.
