Twitter ignored rules when blocking story on Biden - report

Twitter Inc.'s censors ignored company rules when they restricted access to a 2020 New York Post report about the overseas business dealings of Hunter Biden, according to journalist Matt Taibbi's reporting.

To justify the censorship, Twitter had said that the material cited in the report seemed to have been obtained through "hacking." Even though company rules said hacking had to be confirmed by law enforcement for it to be used as a reason for a ban, the censors did not wait for such a confirmation, according to intracompany correspondence that Taibbi has had access to.

Yoel Roth, Twitter's head of trust and safety, wrote in one of the emails that "given the SEVERE risks here and lessons of 2016, we're erring on the side of including a warning and preventing this content from being amplified," strongly implying the company still took into account the refuted allegations about foreign influence in the 2016 election won by Donald Trump.
