US opens lower amid fresh economic data

Stock indexes in the United States opened lower on Friday ahead of the Christmas weekend, with trading set to resume on Tuesday. The day already saw fresh economic data pour in, as the number of durable goods orders in the country marked the biggest drop month over month since the COVID-19 lockdowns, while the US personal spending in November landed at 0.1%, mostly in line with expectations. Traders now await new figures on consumer sentiment as well as new home sales to be published later in the day.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average declined by 0.27% at the opening bell, with Intel pulling the index down by 0.65%.

The Nasdaq 100 decreased by 0.38%, with Atlassian shedding 2.36%.

The S&P 500 dropped by 0.16%, as DexCom lost 1.36%.

The euro gained 0.09% against the dollar at 9:29 am ET to sell for $1.06075.
