United States Secretary of Energy Rick Perry stated on Tuesday that Nord Stream 2 pipeline, which is to transport natural gas from Russia to the European Union, will be put under sanctions by Washington. "The United States Senate is going to pass a bill, the House is going to approve it, and it’s going to go to the President and he’s going to sign it, that is going to put sanctions on Nord Stream 2," he stated. Perry arrived in Ukraine yesterday for an official visit.

Last week, Russian Deputy Minister of Energy Anatoly Yanovsky said that Gazprom will be able to complete the construction of the pipeline on its own in case the US imposes sanctions against companies currently working on it.

Nord Stream 2 is set to become operational next year, going from the Russian port of Ust-Luga on the Baltic Sea to Germany's port of Greifswald. The project is led by state-owned Gazprom, with 50% of the funding coming from Uniper, BASF, Shell, OMV and Engie.
