Trump: Germany has power to block Nord Stream 2

United States President Donald Trump said ahead of a meeting with his Polish counterpart Andrzej Duda on Wednesday that he is looking into the possibility of introducing sanctions on the Nord Stream 2 pipeline in order to block Russia from delivering natural gas to the European Union.

Trump claimed that Germany is putting itself at a "disadvantage" by pursuing the construction of the Nord Stream 2 and buying up to 70% of its energy from Russia. He also added that Germany "has the power" to stop its dependency on Russian energy by choosing not to buy it and warned Berlin could become a "hostage" of Russia in case "something bad" happens.

In May, US Energy Secretary Rick Perry said the US will put sanctions on the Nord Stream 2 project. However, Russia's Deputy Energy Minister Anatoly Yanovsky insisted that state-owned company Gazprom will be able to complete the construction of the pipeline on its own in case the US imposes sanctions against companies currently working on the project. The Nord Stream 2 project is led by Gazprom, with 50% of the funding coming from Uniper, BASF, Shell, OMV and Engie.
