Thyssenkrupp appoints Martina Merz CEO

Thyssenkrupp AG announced on Monday Martina Merz would succeed outgoing chief executive Guido Kerkhoff.

Merz, who chaired the company's supervisory board, is expected to face pressure from investors to find a buyer for its elevator business, which is the steel producer's most profitable unit. The sale was a part of a restructuring effort devised under Kerkhoff, who suffered a loss in confidence following the failure to spin-off of the capital goods units and form a joint venture with Tata Steel.

"We are now looking to the future and continuing our strategic realignment. In the new Executive Board team we will take the structural decisions now on the agenda with the necessary consistency. It's all about positioning thyssenkrupp in such a way that we become better at the end. Only if we achieve this we can strengthen confidence in thyssenkrupp again," Merz said in the press release.
