Lufthansa AG is set to cut its pilot positions by 1,100 in an attempt to reduce costs amid the coronavirus crisis, according to Spiegel's report that was published on Friday.

The German carrier plans to offer early retirement and part-time options to pilots with the layoffs expected to begin in the second quarter of 2021, the report said.

Earlier this week, the airline announced it will further reduce its workforce and fleet, without specifying the exact number of employees that are set to be released. The company noted that 20% of Lufthansa Group's management positions will be axed in the first trimester of 2021, while the administrative office space in Germany is planned to be narrowed by 30%.
