Europe surges at close fueled by vaccine hopes

Equities on major stock markets in Europe jumped at the closing bell on Monday with investors' optimism over containing the coronavirus pandemic increasing on fresh vaccine news.

A vaccine built by Pfizer Inc. and BioNTech SE proved effective on 90% of third phase trial participants, the two companies said in a statement. Following the announcement, Europan Parliament's lawmaker Peter Liese stressed that the European Commission and Pfizer got close to sealing a deal on vaccine supply to help the bloc's fight against the pandemic.

The DAX in Frankfurt soared 5.18%, marking the highest level at close since September 14, as MTU Aero Engines gained over 16%. The CAC 40 surged 7.59% to end the session with Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield climbing nearly 24%, while the FTSE 100 jumped 4.86% concurrently as Rolls-Royce Holdings skyrocketed over 46%. The euro slipped 0.54% against the dollar, trading for 1.18148 at 5:28 pm CET, while the pound lost 0.14% to go for $1.31338 at the same time.
