European markets closed on a higher note on Thursday after Germany's DAX breached 14,000 points for the first time ever.

Today's session was marked by economic data releases and turmoil in the United States following a riot at the Capitol building. Although President Donald Trump, whose rally triggered the chaos on Capitol Hill, promised an orderly transition of power, the incident continued to reverberate throughout the day.

The DAX closed 0.55% in the green, or 13,968 points, after reaching a high of 14,007 points earlier in the session. HeidelbergCement was the strongest performer, rising 3.93%. The CAC 40 gained 0.70% at the close, led higher by Saint Gobain and Renault. The FTSE 100 rose 0.22% as Sainsbury surged 6.88%.
