Europe closes mixed amid fresh lockdown fears

Equities on major European stock markets finished Tuesday's session mixed as investors' concerns over imposing tighter anti-coronavirus measures grew. According to media reports, Germany is set to extend national lockdown until March as Chancellor Angela Merkel aims to prolong the curbs amid increasing virus cases across the country. The decision on the potential lockdown extension is expected to be announced on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, a row between the European Union and Russia deepened after EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell called for new sanctions against Moscow over the jailing of opposition figure Alexei Navalny.

The DAX surrendered 0.38% at the closing bell with RWE AG plunging nearly 3%, while the CAC 40 in Paris stood flat at the same time. The FTSE 100 ended the session gaining 0.17% as Taylor Wimpey Plc. jumped almost 3%. The euro added 0.37% to trade for $1.20953 at 5:30 pm CET.
