Europe surges at close, FTSE hits new record high

Equities on major European stock markets jumped at the closing bell on Monday as investors' recovery hopes increase. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson stated that the government looks to reopen the economy as soon as possible, adding that the country will "try to set out a roadmap out of the lockdown."

On the economic front, the euro area's trade of goods surplus rose to €29.2 billion in December, beating analysts' expectations.

The DAX climbed 0.53% to end the session in the green with MTU Aero Engines increasing more than 2%. The FTSE 100 soared 2.62% to close on another record high as Whitbread Plc. jumped nearly 7%, while the CAC 40 gained 1.57% at the same time led by Vivendi's surge of 20%. The euro advanced 0.12% to change hands for $1.21324 at 5:28 pm CET, while the pound strengthened 0.44% against the greenback concurrently, trading at 1.29122.
