European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen (pictured) stated on Wednesday that the European Union will get 50 million doses of Pfizer Inc. and BioNTech SE COVID vaccines much earlier than scheduled initially.

Von der Leyen said that the doses would arrive in the second quarter of 2021, rather than the fourth as was originally planned. She also announced that the EU is negotiating a third contract with Pfizer and BioNTech on delivering 1.8 billion doses of their COVID vaccines over 2022 and 2023, adding that the contract includes further vaccine production in the EU as well. Leyen made the announcements as the union reached 100 million vaccination.

The news comes in the wake of Johnson & Johnson announcing they will pause their coronavirus vaccine distribution in Europe over fears it may cause blood clots. Meanwhile, Pfizer has announced they are accelerating their vaccine production programs.
