Europe opens higher amid earnings, data

Major stock markets in Europe opened with gains on Friday amid earnings season and ahead of another batch of data on GDP and unemployment in the European Union.

Several companies reported their first-quarter results ahead of today's session, including AstraZeneca, Barclays and BNP Paribas, while more are expected later in the day.

The DAX gained 0.34% at the opening bell, with MTU Aero Engines advancing 1.20%. The CAC 40 rose 0.23%, as Saint Gobain increased by 1.77%. The FTSE 100 climbed 0.13%. AstraZeneca soared 2.14% after earnings. The euro fell 0.09% against the dollar to trade for 1.21087, while the pound dropped 0.13% to $1.39276 at 9:05 am CET.
