The Japanese health authorities will decide on May 20 whether to allow the use of COVID-19 vaccines developed by AstraZeneca plc and Moderna Inc., Japan Broadcasting Corporation (NHK) reported on Thursday.

The Asian country has so far approved only the vaccine made by Pfizer/BioNTech, with a bit more than 1% of Japan's population inoculated against the coronavirus so far.

Earlier during the day, governors of Tokyo and Osaka prefectures announced they will ask the central government to extend the state of emergency due to high infection rates, and a heavier presence of new COVID-19 variants.
