Major stock markets in Europe opened the trading session on Friday mostly flat, as investors waited for the latest batch of economic data reports to indicate the state of the post-pandemic recovery. The United Kingdom and the European Union are set to release their construction and retail sales reports later in the day respectively. Meanwhile, the UK stated they are taking a "cautious approach" to the country's reopening, and the EU has fresh doubts that a breakthrough on the Northern Ireland Protocol can be reached.

The DAX opened 0.11% higher, with RWE AG increasing 0.65%. The FTSE 100 and the CAC 40 stood flat at the opening bell, with Mondi plc and Engie increasing 0.39% and 0.21% respectively.

The euro decreased 0.09% against the dollar trading for $1.21161 at 9:03 am CET, while at the same time the pound stood flat against the greenback trading for $1.41058.
