99% of recent COVID-19 cases in UK are Delta variant - PHE

Almost all COVID-19 cases in the United Kingdom detected in the last week were caused by the Delta variant, Public Health England (PHE) said in an update on Friday. There have been 33,630 infections attributable to the variant since last week, bringing the total so far to 75,953. The data also showed an increase in hospitalizations compared to the Alpha variant, although two doses of the coronavirus vaccine provide "a high degree of protection against hospitalization, estimated to be more than 90%."

"Cases are rising rapidly across the country and the Delta variant is now dominant. The increase is primarily in younger age groups, a large proportion of which were unvaccinated but are now being invited to receive the vaccine," said Dr. Jenny Harries, chief executive of the UK Health Security Agency.
