The World Health Organization’s chief scientist Soumya Swaminathan said during a conference on Friday that the Delta variant of the COVID-19 virus, first found in India, is becoming the globally dominant strain of the disease.

"The Delta variant is well on its way to becoming the dominant variant globally because of its increased transmissibility," Swaminathan said.

She also noted that the WHO was disappointed with the results from the CureVac vaccine initial trial, which showed only 47% efficacy against the virus. The jab missed the efficacy goal of 50% set by the WHO and has put hundreds of potential vaccine deliveries on hold.
