European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced on Tuesday that the European Union has secured another 150 million doses of the coronavirus vaccine developed by Moderna Inc.

In a tweet, she also revealed that the bloc is "securing a contract for new generation vaccines," explaining that they "will give us the flexibility we need to procure adapted #COVID19 vaccines to protect people from new variants of the virus."

The United States government bought 200 million more Moderna vaccines last week.
