Apple Inc. and Intel Corp. became the first companies to start testing their chip designs with 3-nanometer production technology developed by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., Nikkei reported on Friday.

"Currently, the chip volume planned for Intel is more than that for Apple's iPad using the 3-nanometer process," a source told the outlet, adding the mass production of these chips could start at the end of 2022.

When fully adopted, the technology should increase processor performance by 10% while reducing power consumption by up to 30%. While Apple hasn't responded to the report, Intel said it is working with TSMC on its products set for release in 2023.
