Volvo Group, Daimler AG, and Volkswagen AG's truck manufacturing division Traton SE announced on Monday they intend to form a joint venture that will develop a network of charging stations for electric long-haul trucks in Europe.

According to the non-binding agreement the three companies signed, the operations are scheduled to start in 2022 with a joint capital of €500 million. The truck makers aim to create "at least 1,700" charging points by 2027, the joint statement explained.

"It is the joint aim of Europe's truck manufacturers to achieve climate neutrality by 2050. However, it is vital that building up the right infrastructure goes hand in hand with putting CO\2\-neutral trucks on the road. Together with Volvo Group and the TRATON GROUP, we are therefore very excited to take this pioneering step to establish a high-performance charging network across Europe," Daimler Truck CEO Martin Daum commented.
