Europe closes lower amid new virus wave concerns

Major stock markets in Europe closed lower on Monday as the Old Continent once again faces growing fears of another wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson is to hold a press conference about his government's plans for reopening the country. Meanwhile, Britain and the European Union, among others, accused China of organizing a series of cyberattacks earlier this year using Microsoft Exchange servers.

The DAX closed 2.78% or 431 points lower as MTU Aero Engines NA sank by 6.12%. The FTSE 100 plummeted by 2.38%, with ITV PLC went down by 6.72%. The CAC 40 dropped by 2.71% as Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield SE plunged by 7.54%.

The euro declined by 0.06% against the dollar at 5:27 pm CET, selling for $1.17980. At the same time, the pound sterling lost 0.64% to the greenback to change hands for $1.36770.
