Europe opens lower amid earnings, data

Major European stock markets opened lower on Monday with corporate earnings and economic data marking the day. Philips N.V. and Ryanair Holdings plc reported their financial results ahead of the opening bell, while the IFO Institute is set to publish the German business sentiment index for July later in the session.

The DAX fell 0.53% at the open, with Continental AG sinking 2.32%. The FTSE 100 lost 0.46%, as Melrose Industries plc decreased by 1.56%. The CAC 40 declined 0.48%. Societe Generale SA led the losses by declining 0.96%. Both the euro and the pound traded flat against the dollar at 9:04 am CET to trade for 1.17761 and 1.37508, respectively.
