Europe opens slightly lower ahead of Powell speech

European markets opened slightly lower on Friday as investors awaited the US Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell's speech at the virtual Jackson Hole symposium, hoping he will give some signals on the timing of the bank's tapering plans.

The FTSE 100 was flat at 9:00 am CET.

The DAX declined 0.17% at 9:01 am CET. The worst performer was Siemens Energy whose shares fell 0.58%.

The CAC 40 lost 0.11% at 9:00 am CET. Essilorluxottica led the losses as its shares fell 0.61%.

The euro rose 0.13% against the dollar to sell for 1.17680 at 8:59 am CET and the pound was up 0.06% compared to the greenback to go for 1.37080 at the same time.
