Chinese authorities have suspended the approval of all new online video games in the country as they try to combat the rising levels of video games addiction among young people, the South China Morning Post reported on Thursday.

Citing people familiar with the matter, the priority of Chinese officials is to reduce the number of new games, with officials also criticizing the high approval rate of new games in the first half of 2021. While it is unclear how long the approval ban will last, sources told the publication new games will be on hold "for a while."

Earlier it was reported that Tencent and NetEase attended a meeting with Chinese regulators on tackling gaming addiction with minors, with the former confirming it will abide by the new gaming restrictions placed on the companies by the Chinese government.
