England's deputy chief medical officer Jonathan Van-Tam insisted on Tuesday that the government's plan to start administering booster COVID-19 shots will help in preventing the winter coronavirus outbreak.

"The booster program will make a very substantial impact on keeping the lid on things COVID-19 wise in terms of hospitalisations and deaths and keeping pressure off the NHS [National Health Service] this winter," Van-Tam told reporters at a press briefing.

The remarks come after the British Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation approved the use of Moderna's and Pfizer's booster shots in people aged over 50 and groups with a compromised immune system.
