Report: COVID breaching immunity after J&J vaccine

Friday, 17. September 2021 11:30

German experts and authorities are noticing a spike in infections by the COVID-19 virus among individuals vaccinated with the Johnson & Johnson vaccine. Currently, 6,106 people have been infected by the virus despite being fully vaccinated, the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) said on Friday.

So far, three million people have received a Johnson & Johnson vaccine in Germany, with roughly 2,000 confirmed infections for every million vaccinations. The Johnson & Johnson jab is the only approved vaccine in the European Union that requires only one dose.

The Johnson & Johnson vaccine is slower to generate an immune response than the mRNA vaccines (Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna), leaving the patient with a lower number of antibodies and therefore weaker initial protection against the virus, explained Carsten Watzl, Secretary-General of the German Society for Immunology.
