Josep Borrell, High Representative of the European Union's (EU) diplomatic service, met with Australian Foreign Minister Marise Payne on the margins of the United Nations General Assembly on Monday.

According to a press release from the European External Action Service (EEAS), Borrell and Payne had a discussion regarding the AUKUS security partnership and the "cancellation of the submarine contract with France," during which the chief EU diplomat "inquired about the lack of prior consultations and regretted that this partnership excludes European partners, who have a strong presence in the Pacific."

The meeting follows stern statements coming from EU officials in the wake of the recent submarine scandal, in which Australia tore up its existing contract with France in favour of nuclear-powered subs to be developed under the auspices of the new security pact with Britain and the United States.
