Volvo Car USA LLC will recall at least 259,383 cars due to an airbag defect that resulted in one death.

The recall will affect "certain" 2001-2006 S80 and 2001-2009 S60 vehicles, according to a United States National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) safety recall report released on Tuesday.

"The driver's air bag inflator may explode during deployment, due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, high temperatures, and high temperature cycling. An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants, resulting in serious injury or death," it was said in the report.
