FDA delays Moderna vaccine approval for 12-17 year olds

The United States Food and Drug Administration is delaying its approval of the use of Moderna Inc.'s coronavirus vaccine in adolescents, the Wall Street Journal reported on Friday.

Citing sources familiar with the matter, the report indicates that the move is a result of a potentially heightened risk of getting a rare inflammatory heart condition in that age group following the shot.

At the moment, there is no determination whether the risk is actually elevated, but the FDA is taking more time to analyze the data. It is currently unknown how long the delay may last, but the report suggests it could be several weeks.
