Dow, S&P hit new highs at open ahead of Powell speech

Shares on the major stock markets in the United States opened mixed on Friday as investors digested strong earnings reports from American Express and Schlumberger, following weaker earnings reports from Intel and Snap overnight.

The White House reported that spending bill discussions were "coming along" but that there was no specific timeline for a final agreement. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell is due to speak later today on the current state of the country's output.

The Dow Jones sat 0.09% in the green at 9:31 am ET, however started surging shortly after led by American Express adding 4.07% as at 9:32 am. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq were 0.09% and 0.43% under the flatline respectively, with Intel diving over 10% across both indexes. The euro gained 0.12% on the dollar at 9:28 am ET, selling for 1.16358.
