Some companies run in part by the Chinese government limited the use of Weixin, a messenger service developed by Tencent Holdings Ltd., The Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday, citing people familiar with the matter.

The firms, including China Mobile Ltd., China National Petroleum Corporation, and China Construction Bank Corp., cited security concerns as the reason for the decision, the outlet wrote.

"Any chat groups set up for work purposes on Weixin [...] could contain sensitive information and should be shut down and deleted," one of the sources quoted their manager.
