Khan ends London's major incident status

London Mayor Sadiq Khan ended on Friday the "major incident" status that was declared in December due to a rise in COVID-19 infections caused by the Omicron variant. "But the virus and the Omicron variant is still with us and daily infection rates are still too high. That’s why we must all remain vigilant and continue to do the things that have allowed our city to reopen safely," he warned.

Khan disagreed with the British government's decision to end mask mandates in shops and on public transport in England next week. He stated face coverings remain "one of the single most important and easiest things we can all do to prevent the spread of COVID-19" and called for a renewal of mandates for public transport.
