Albanese, Macron promise 'new start' of relations

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said he is welcoming a "new start" in relations with France as he met French President Emmanuel Macron on Friday.

Relations between Canberra and Paris were strained after former Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison negotiated a deal between Australia, the United States, and the United Kingdom to supply nuclear-powered submarines in place of the French ones.

"We will speak about the future, not the past," Macron said at the Elysee Palace. "He is not responsible for what happened." Meanwhile, Albanese recognized France as a "great power" in Europe and the world. "Australia's relationship with France matters. Trust, respect, and honesty matter. This is how I will approach our relations," he added.
