Bolsonaro in narrow lead as half of votes counted in Brazil elections

Brazil's incumbent President Jair Bolsonaro was leading the presidential race after 52.21% of the ballots were counted in the country's general elections. Bolsonaro got 46.31% of the vote, while former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva had 44.86%.

Bolsonaro was elected to power in 2019. A former military and Brazilian National Congress member, he is a conservative figure with frequently controversial views. Meanwhile, Workers' Party leader Lula was president for two terms, from 2003 to 2010. He was sentenced to a prison term for corruption in 2017 but was acquitted in 2019 when the case was overturned.
