IAEA's Grossi: Zaporizhzhia belongs to Ukraine

Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Grossi said on Friday that his organization considers the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant Ukrainian despite Russia accepting it as a part of its territory.

"This is a matter that has to do with international law," Gross stated during a press conference in Kiev. "We want the war to stop immediately, and of course the position of the IAEA is that this facility is a Ukrainian facility," he added. Meanwhile, the United States Department of State also stressed that the facility "belongs to Ukraine and the electricity and the energy that it produces rightly belongs to Ukraine."

Earlier this week, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered his government to take control of the nuclear plant after the Zaporizhzhia region voted to join Russia in a referendum unrecognized by the international community.
