Changes to Taiwan status quo must go peacefully - Scholz

Friday, 04. November 2022 11:16

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz stressed on Friday that any potential changes to Taiwan's status quo must be peaceful and mutually agreed upon by both Beijing and Taipei.

During his visit to China, which started earlier today, Scholz held a press conference with his Chinese counterpart, Premier Li Keqiang, who personally invited him to Beijing last month. Scholz's visit marks the first time a European leader officially traveled to China since the start of the coronavirus pandemic.

During the visit, Scholz also held a meeting with President Xi Jinping, who recently secured a record third term as the head of the ruling Communist Party. Following the meeting, Scholz told reporters that China agreed to authorize the use of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine for foreign residents, while continuing discussions on the approval for the wider Chinese population.
