US closes mostly lower after new budget deficit reveal

Major stock markets in the United States closed mostly lower on Monday after the Bureau of Fiscal Service's latest Monthly Treasury Statement revealed the country's budget deficit stood at $660 billion in March. Federal Reserve Bank of Boston President Eric Rosengren noted the labor-market slack was still significant amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Meanwhile, the White House predicted a modest rise in inflation over the next several months.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed 0.16% lower as Intel Corporation declined by 4.18%. The Nasdaq 100 fell by 0.19%, with Trip.com Group Limited going down by 5.40%. Meanwhile, the S&P 500 stood flat.

The euro gained 0.06% to the dollar to sell for $1.19076 at 3:57 pm ET.
