Markets in the United States started trading mixed on Tuesday, seeking direction following a massive selloff in the previous session.

As trading began in New York, investors monitored corporate earnings, including those of drugmakers Merck, Eli Lilly and Pfizer, and economic data reports. In politics, Democrats and the White House failed to make progress on a stimulus deal, while Judge Amy Coney Barrett was confirmed to the Supreme Court following a contentious Senate vote.

The Dow Jones opened flat, while the S&P 500 rose 0.15%, before turning to losses. The Nasdaq 100 gained 0.50% in the first minute of trading. Xilinx surged over 9% to the top of the chart after it was revealed AMD intends to buy the company for $35 billion.
