Shares on stock markets in London and Paris sank at the closing bell on Thursday to finish the year in the red territory, while the DAX in Frankfurt was closed amid the exchange holiday.

The United States decided to widen sanctions against European aircraft manufacturer Airbus and wine imports from the European Union, raising concerns across the bloc. The EU said it "regrets" the move as it "disrupts negotiations to find a settlement to aircraft subsidy dispute," while Airbus condemned Washington's "unwarranted and counterproductive tariffs," urging the bloc's leaders to "defend its interests and the interests of all European companies and sectors."

The FTSE 100 plunged 1.45% at the close, marking a drop of 15% in 2020. International Consolidated Airlines Group was the worst performer in London as it plummeted nearly 5%. The CAC 40 surrendered 0.86% to end Thursday's session to slump over 7% this year with Safran sliding over 2% at the closing bell. The euro lost 0.20% at 2:00 pm CET to change hands for $1.22668, while the pound added 0.32% to trade at $1.36611 a minute later.
