US markets open lower, Dow falls 500 pts

Major stock markets in the United States opened on Thursday in the red territory after the latest reports on the country's initial jobless claims and personal spending.

Earlier, the Department of Labor said the number of seasonally adjusted initial jobless claims in the United States fell by 2,000 to 231,000 in the week ending June 25. On the other side, the country's Bureau of Economic Analysis published that personal consumption expenditures increased by $32.7 billion or 0.2%.

After opening with a 333-point loss, the Dow Jones Industrial Average extended its decline to fall 1.61% or 500 points at 9:39 am ET, with Walgreens Boots dipping by 5.05%. At 9:32 am ET, the Nasdaq 100 lost 1.02%. The S&P 500 sank 1.18%, while Universal Health Services dropped by 6.68%. The euro was down by 0.26% against the dollar at 9:28 am ET, selling for $1.04151.
