The Indian government unveiled on Thursday new guidelines for social media companies like Facebook Inc. and Twitter Inc.

The new measures require the companies to establish "grievance redressal mechanisms," as well as to appoint people based in India who will work together with law enforcement to address complaints relating to problematic content.

"We appreciate the proliferation of social media in India. We want them to be more responsible and more accountable," Minister of Electronics and Information Technology Ravi Shankar Prasad (pictured right) said.
