Europe closes lower amid fresh coronavirus fears

Major stock markets in Europe closed lower on Friday after Germany saw a new significant rise in infections from COVID-19, a day after it reported a three-month high in cases registered daily. Meanwhile, England's R number, an average figure for people one person can infect, increased from between 0.7 and 1 to between 0.8 to 1. In the meantime, it was revealed the growth of Germany's private sector declined in April.

The DAX closed 0.30% lower as Deutsche Wohnen SE lost 2.54%. The FTSE 100 decreased by 0.10%, with Sainsbury PLC falling by 2.61%. The CAC 40 went down by 0.15% as Sanofi SA dropped by 1.43%.

The euro gained 0.39% against the dollar to sell for $1.20622 at 5:29 pm CET. At the same time, the pound sterling stood flat against the greenback to change hands for $1.38458.
