New York Attorney General Letitia James, alongside 43 other attorneys general, urged on Monday Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg to call off the launch of Instagram for children under the age of 13.

The coalition claimed that exposing children to social media at that age "can be detrimental" for "myriad of reasons," and accused Facebook of having "historically failed to protect the welfare of children on its platforms."

Reports hinting that Facebook is working on a children-suitable version of the Instagram app emerged in March. Facebook confirmed it is developing multiple applications that would allow children to use them while ensuring transparency for the parents.
