Facebook suspends Trump's account for two years

Facebook announced on Friday it is suspending all of former President Donald Trump's accounts for two years effective from January 7 this year when he was initially banned from the social media platform.

According to the company, when the suspension is lifted in 2023, there will be a "strict set of rapidly escalating sanctions that will be triggered if Mr. Trump commits further violations in future, up to and including permanent removal of his pages and accounts." Facebook added that it understands today's decision will be deemed as "controversial."

Last month, Facebook's Oversight Board decided to uphold the company's ban on Trump's account due to his role in the January 6 Capitol riots.
