Europe opens mostly flat with focus on UK data

Major stock markets in Europe opened flat on Thursday, as investors digested the latest economic data reports coming out of the United Kingdom. Earlier this morning, the UK reported an expansion of its gross domestic product in the second quarter, as well as an increase in its trade deficit and a decline in its industrial production. Meanwhile, in business, Deutsche Telekom and RWE reported their respective quarterly earnings.

The DAX and the CAC 40 were flat at the beginning of the session. The FTSE 100 started 0.13% lower, with Rio Tinto falling 8.08%. Both the euro and the pound stood flat against the dollar as they traded for $1.17352 and $1.38619 respectively at 9:11 am CET.
