United States Department of Defense (DoD) ordered on Sunday the activation of stage one of the Civil Reserve Air Fleet (CRAF) to assist in the evacuation efforts out of Afghanistan.

A total of 18 airplanes from US commercial airlines will be used: four from United Airlines Inc., three each from American Airlines Inc., Atlas Air Inc., Delta Air Lines Inc., and Omni Air International LLC, as well as two from Hawaiian Airlines.

The Pentagon explained that the civilian aircraft will not be flying into the Kabul international airport, but that they will be used for further transportation of evacuees who were already flown out of the Afghan capital to "temporary safe havens and interim staging bases," confirming an earlier media report.
